How to use UV maps to customize 3D models

A few tips on UV mapping to help you understand and manipulate 3D textures.

  1. The basic idea of a UV map is that it is a flat image that wraps around a 3D object.
  2. This can be visualised with the example of a creme egg or chocolate wrapper: When The wrapper is flat it seems stretched or out of place, when it is wrapped around the chocolate the design will line up with the underlying 3D shape.
  3. The same principle is present in UV maps, the shape of the underlying geometry is mapped to coordinates in the flat image so any changes made to the flat image will show up in the respective area on the 3D object.
  4. This can be tested by editing the 2D image and seeing what effect it has on the wrapped texture. The edits will show up in the respective 3D area.
