How to output Stencil Clip Layers with your 360 Degree Renders in Unreal Engine for professional color-grading

With our integrated EXR output you can add different render passes as stencil clip layers within a single EXR file of your Unreal 360 Degree render.
You can then use these passes to fine tune certain areas of your render and add things like lens flares and bloom after rendering.
This makes it possible to do advanced compositing in Post Production software like Davinci, After Effects, Natron or Nuke.
Stencil Layers are recommended to use rather than Alpha because they include the correct colors and full post-process effects whereas Alpha excludes these if they are not in the selected pixels.
  1. In your Movie Render Queue Settings add an EXR Sequence, select a Compression Type and make sure Multilayer is ticked:
  2. In the OWL 360 Movie Render Section, scroll down to Stencil Clip Layers:
    1. Render Main Pass will render the main MRQ pass with all layers combined.
    2. Add Default Layer will render everything that is not assigned to a layer, so forms a background for any Stencil Clipped Layers.
    3. Actor Layers are where you will select the Layers you have created of the different elements in your scene.
    4. Data Layers are another option which allow more complex and dynamic layers (see Epic documentation):
  3. To add a Layer, it needs to have already been created (see guide below). After that it will show as an option when you click the + button in either Actor or Data Layers to create an Array. You can select as many Layers as you like as separate array lines and they will render out separately.

How to Create a Layer

  1. Go to Window and Ensure that Layers is ticked. Click it to view the Layers panel:
  2. Select one or more Actor/s in your scene then right click in the layers panel and select Assign Actor to New Layer:
  3. If you have an existing Layer then you can also add the Actor to it.
  4. You can check that the layer is assigned by clicking the eye icon next to the Layer and seeing the selected actor disappear:
  5. Now you can select the Layer you have created in Movie Render Queue as a Stencil Layer and whatever Actors are inside will render separately.
